UltraVision Shortlisted for Manufacturer of the Year Award

The contact lens company UltraVision CLPL has been named as a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year Awards 2011. The awards celebrate the strength and diversity of UK Manufacturing and UltraVision has been nominated in the Innovation and Design category for its range of soft contact lenses for irregular cornea, KeraSoft®.

UltraVision CEO, J Keith Lomas and Project Development Manager & Optometrist Abigail Stott presented the development of the innovative contact lens range to a panel of judges at Manchester United Football Club, followed by an intensive thirty minute viva.

Abigail Stott commented, “We are delighted to reach the final of this prestigious award. KeraSoft has changed the lives of so many irregular cornea patients across the world; this nomination bears testament to the hard work of the team behind this groundbreaking technology.”

The winner of the award will be announced at a gala dinner to be held at Lancashire Cricket Ground on 9th November.

New Tinted Contact Lens Range Launches 1st November

UltraVision is pleased to announce the forthcoming launch of its new Cosmetic and Prosthetic range with a series of new colours and enhancement features, such as printed simulated irides, which provide a more natural look. The revised options will ensure reproducibility and introduce clarity to the Tinting procedures available.

The new product brochure for Cosmetic and Prosthetic contact lenses contains clear information on the range of materials, colours, densities and enhancement features. Also available is a separate insert which details the tint colours and densities available. We have noted that different screen resolutions and printers will show the colours to be very different. For accuracy, you can request, from Customer Services, a hard copy to be posted to you.

To ensure a smooth changeover period, the following procedure will be implemented:

Orders placed before 21st October will be fulfilled using the current tint range.
Orders received week commencing 24th October will be held until the launch date of 1st November.

UltraVision’s new Cosmetic and Prosthetic range can be applied to the following lens designs:

KeraSoft® IC (77% only)
DuraWave® (58%, 67% & 77%)
Igel™ (58%, 67% & 77%)
Prima™ (67% only)
Presto™ (58% only)

The above changes do not affect the Softint™ range, comprising; Zero6™, Omniflex™, H67™ and MiNi™ lenses. The Softint™ range will continue to be available during week commencing 24th October.

The range of tints will be showcased at the upcoming HOAC and NOC Conferences in Kenilworth, held from 3rd to 6th November 2011.

KeraSoft IC Step-byStep Video Training

A series of online training videos has been launched by UltraVision CLPL for KeraSoft IC, the specialist soft contact lens designed to give patients with keratoconus and other irregular cornea conditions clear, comfortable vision all day long. A step-by-step guide of the whole KeraSoft IC fitting process is provided for the practitioner; from assessment of the cornea, through to making adjustments to the periphery of the lens.

The videos are being extremely well received; eye care professionals’ feedback includes Werner Noeth from South Africa saying, “I feel even more confident now and have fitted around 22 patients with great success” and Fernandez Fernandez-Velazquez, an irregular cornea specialist from Spain, commented “Thumbs up for your new online training, it is a wonderful achievement”. The package is designed as an advanced tool to enable practitioners, even with minimal specialist experience, to fit complex irregular corneas.

The KeraSoft IC training videos are found on the dedicated training web site www.kerasoft.co.uk/training and each user is provided with unique login details, allowing them the freedom to train at their individual pace.

A range of close-ups of the lens on-eye enables the contact lens fitter to confidently identify an optimal, tight or flat fitting lens in practice. Grouped into Core Fitting modules the videos cover the fitting process for the majority of irregular corneas with minimal adjustment to the lens. The Completion section outlines the requirements for ordering the required lens and the Advanced Fitting modules guide the practitioner through more complex fitting cases. Complimentary fitting tools to use in the consulting room and useful clinical hints and tips from the Troubleshooting section are also available to download from the website.

Presentation Certificates are available for practitioners who successfully complete the course and a short online multiple choice exam.

The 37th Hospital Optometrists Annual Conference will be held at Chesford Grange, Kenilworth over the weekend 4th - 6th November 2011.

This event is open to all - you do not have to be a hospital optometrist to register as a delegate.

The conference will again be held in association with the National Optometric Conference.

UltraVision CEO announces FDA approval during Queen’s Awards Presentation

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, the most prestigious award for a UK business, was bestowed upon UltraVision in April this year, specifically for KeraSoft®; a patented soft contact lens for Irregular Corneas and Keratoconus.

The official presentation by Her Majesty’s representative, Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Sir Samuel Whitbread KCVO JP, took place today at UltraVision’s Head Office in Leighton Buzzard. All UltraVision staff members attended, along with guests from the optical profession and community leaders. Sir Samuel Whitbread presented the Company with an official scroll, signed by Her Majesty The Queen and Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister at the time the award was given.

This is the second Queen’s Award UltraVision has received; its first was given in 2006 for UltraWave® and SAM® technologies.

“To receive the Queen’s Award once is a serious achievement, but twice is out of this world” said Lomas. “We were improving people’s vision but now our team is taking our technologies to new levels and dramatically changing lives for the better”.

J Keith Lomas, UltraVision’s CEO, gave a presentation prior to Sir Samuel Whitbread’s presentation, where he talked about the history of contact lenses; from the first concept by Leonardo da Vinci over 500 years ago to contact lenses as we know them today.

Mr Lomas also announced that, in partnership with Contamac and others, KeraSoft® lenses have recently received FDA approval, which is another immense achievement for UltraVision and its staff. FDA approval means that these soft lenses for Irregular Corneas and Keratoconus can now be supplied in the USA, the largest contact lens market in the world.

UltraVision staff are again looking forward to exhibiting on stand 22 at the NOC and HOAC conferences on 4th - 7th November, at Park Inn, Heathrow, London.

KeraSoft gives new hope to Professional Cricketer

Indian professional cricketer, Abhishek Chakraborty, diagnosed with Keratoconus 10 years ago, recently had his eyesight restored with KeraSoft® contact lenses. Unable to see with spectacles, Chakraborty wore RGP contact lenses to correct his vision. But, with a reduced wear time of around 2 hours per day, Abhishek decided that a career in cricket was no longer viable; for a promising young player this was a devastating blow.

After reading about KeraSoft® on the internet he contacted KeraSoft Eyecare Pvt Ltd., India, in the hope that they could help restore his vision to enable him to re-join his West Bengal State cricket team. He was fitted with KeraSoft® lenses by the company’s resident Optometrist, Jeetender Prashad, and has achieved an improved visual acuity compared to that with his RGPs, with the added benefit of comfortable all-day wear.

Abhishek Chakraborty recently assisted Irregular Cornea and Keratoconus Consultant, Lynn White, in a live demonstration of KeraSoft® lenses at a conference entitled ‘Sight Restoration with Contact Lenses’ held at the India International Centre in New Delhi. The conference is the first purely educational conference of its kind in India and was received with enthusiasm and interest by the attending Opticians and Ophthalmologists from India and other South Asian countries.

A question and answer session culminated in an audience member asking Chakraborty if he was happy with his KeraSoft® lenses and would he ever consider a return to RGP lenses, to which he replied “I would never go back to RGPs... I can wear my KeraSoft® lenses all day and am already practising in the nets with no discomfort or vision problems.” Chakraborty has since returned to practising with his State team, resumed fielding practice and is now able to spot the ball with ease.

Lynn White commented,“For people like Chakraborty being able to wear contact lenses, such as KeraSoft®, all day with comfort is not just a lifestyle choice; they play an essential part in enabling keratoconics to lead a normal life again. Something that many of us take for granted.”

Of course there are many, usually more extreme cases where off the shelf disposable lenses do not work. That’s where the KeraSoft IC comes in. My fitting set, the only one in NZ as far as I know, arrived early in the New Year. Since my return from travels in February I have now trialed and fitted a few complex cases with some great results.

Challenging Cases
It’s never fair to a new lens design to throw all the grief cases at it that have been building up on ones desk for the past six months. Such cases have generally failed outright or failed to obtain decent wearing time, comfort, vision or physiology. Trialing a new lens on such cases will likely increase the failure rate. I am pleased to report that of the trials I did the success rates with KeraSoft IC were pretty impressive. Two cases have decided to think about it and one simply had too poor vision to benefit. Such cases are really at the graft stage as RGPs, piggybacks, semi-sclerals and other options have failed to date. I currently have three cases that are all doing rather well.

In general I have been suitably impressed with the lenses and in particular the stability and accuracy of fit and lack of rotation, particularly considering the complexity of the lenses and corneas involved.
My results with a variety of NZ, AUS and UK manufactured custom silicone hydrogel torics in high powers over the past few years have been an almost universal disappointment. The KeraSoft results were thus a pleasant surprise.

As usual I temper my comments with the fact that these are initial results but the true test is time.

Life Changing Lens Showcased at BCLA

UltraVision was delighted with the large number of visitors to their stand at the BCLA this weekend. KeraSoft IC, the new soft contact lens for all irregular corneas generated most interest. Folllowing Cristina Kenney’s lecture on Friday morning, practitioners wanted to know all about how KeraSoft IC can provide their irregular and keratoconic patients with a healthy alternative to RGP lenses.

UltraVision, featured its most popular products; KeraSoft® IC, UltraWave® SiH and their Multifocal range of contact lenses. J Keith Lomas, CEO, was thrilled with the amount of interest shown, “KeraSoft IC was a particular draw to our stand this year. The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, along with the dedication and enthusiasm for a working alternative to GP lenses from the whole UltraVision team, have helped raise the profile of this revolutionary contact lens which has changed many patients’ lives for the better.”

UltraVision CLPL is celebrating the fantastic news of a second Queen’s Awards for Enterprise – Innovation

UltraVision CLPL, the largest independent manufacturer, supplier and licensor of contact lenses in the UK, has scored a double with a second Queen’s Award for Enterprise – Innovation.

The Queen’s Award is the highest honour that can be bestowed on a UK company and was awarded specifically for KeraSoft®, UltraVision’s patented soft and silicone hydrogel contact lenses for all irregular corneas including keratoconus.

In 2006 UltraVision received the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation for its SAM® and UltraWave® technologies. As well as being applied to UltraWave® monthly disposable contact lenses, SAM® and Wavefront technology are also applied to KeraSoft®, HydroWave® and DuraWave® contact lenses.

The UltraVision group formed by two former St. Albans School friends, J Keith Lomas, Group CEO, and John Clamp, Group COO, both aged 39, is expanding throughout the world with sales into more than 60 countries.

Patients can have irregular corneas for a number of reasons including disease, trauma, corneal transplants or failed laser surgery, such as LASIK, and other prescription changing operations. Standard contact lenses or spectacles do not successfully address such complexities so patients can have considerably reduced vision. The traditional approach was with hard or rigid gas permeable lenses, but the rigid surfaces on thinning tissue was often extremely uncomfortable and resulted in short wearing times or patients not even able to wear the rigid lenses at all; so minimal sight.

KeraSoft® lenses are a combination of the latest in soft and silicone hydrogel materials using geometries from complex mathematics to offer comfortable wear and excellent vision for all waking hours, engineered and developed by John Clamp, COO. Keratoconus Consultant and Optometrist Lynn White, helped refine the design for a wide range of irregular cornea conditions through her close work with her patients.

Gareth Beynon, a keratoconic patient from Rugby, Warwickshire said “I had to persevere with rigid lenses for years as there used to be no alternative. I was limited to a maximum of six to eight hours of comfortable wear a day, five days a week so I had to choose when I could see; at home or at work. My life revolved around whether I could wear my lenses or not and had no spontaneity at all. I had to rely on others being present most of the time in case I had a problem with the lenses which was very frustrating. With the KeraSoft® lens, it’s like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. I can now see throughout all my waking hours, have resurrected my motor racing hobby and have got my life back. This is genuinely transformational for me and others. KeraSoft® lenses are fitted and dispensed by optometrists and opticians in hospital departments, private and high street practices. Ophthalmologists are using the lenses both pre and post-operatively, following cross-linking surgery and as a safer and longer term solution than corneal transplants.

UltraVision CLPL states that KeraSoft® sales are growing by double digit percentages month on month. As well as launching directly in India with new dedicated operations in Trivandrum, Kerala, UltraVision CLPL is currently in licensing discussions with third parties to help accelerate the roll out of KeraSoft® around the world.

KeraSoft a 'Hot Topic' in Las Vegas

Irregular Cornea expert, Lynn White MSc FCOptom presented alongside Eef van der Worp BOptom PhD, Tim Koch FCLSA of Contamac and Jose Manuel Gonzalez-Meijome OD PhD of the University of Minho in Portugal, at the recent 2010 Global Specialty Lens Symposium, with ~400 practitioners present.

During Contamac's breakout session, Lynn described how specialty soft lenses have a prominent role to play in the ongoing management of patients. Also during the presentation, 'Advantages of Fitting Irregular Corneas with High Water Content Soft Lens Materials', case studies showed how irregular cornea patients could be given an improved quality of life, even after surgery, with custom made soft lenses.

The emerging use of custom-made soft lenses for the correction of irregular corneas including keratoconus was a hot topic at the Las Vegas based GSLS. Lynn White gave three presentations based around KeraSoft® IC and how the treatment and management of Keratoconus is evolving rapidly in the UK and the rest of the world.

Michigan based Art Optical, who completed an agreement in 2007 to license advanced lathe-cut soft lens technology for the USA from UltraVision, invited Lynn White to present 'The KeraSoft® IC Revolution: Experiences from the UK and Beyond' in their breakout session.

J Keith Lomas, CEO of UltraVision, and COO John Clamp, also attended the Symposium. Keith Lomas commented, 'The interest shown in KeraSoft® IC was an excellent boost with delegates approaching us to express their enthusiasm in the much anticipated lens design. The KeraSoft® design is inspiring practitioners across the globe to move irregular cornea patients out of GP lenses and into soft lenses which can provide up to 18 hours of comfortable wear time.'

With many years of experience in practice, Lynn White is passionate about the benefits of soft lenses when dealing with compromised corneas. Her philosophy of 'doing no harm' to the eye and providing patients with lenses that improve their quality of life beyond all previous expectations is her driving force and she articulated this clearly in her final presentation: 'The UK Experience in Custom-made Silicone Hydrogel lenses for the Irregular Cornea'.
